Saturday, November 30, 2002 so apparently, i've been giving off a twinkie image (yellow on the outside, white on the inside), just because: 1) i think korean rap is ridiculous sounding (please. asian people CANNOT be ghetto. they just don't have the physique for it. unless you count burly gangstas like yong. but he's an outlier, so that's besides the point). 2) i like white college preppy bands (i like the way they sound, not their fanbase, btw) 3) i don't believe in joining asian cliques in this school because frankly, i am better than most of the people in them 4) i actually think for myself and speak my mind instead of being your typical quiet asian girl that never says anything and has no opinions on things such as politics. i assume these are some reasons why i have, unawares, cultivated a banana image. to tell you the truth (if you even care), i am very proud of my korean heritage (although this was not always the case). what i am not proud of are some of my fellow koreans, especially those in EB. i am not proud of how they feel it's so absolutely necessary to flaunt their nationality around even though their knowledge of korean is often limited to the trash they hear in pop/rap music; i am not proud of their inability to think (all the militant christians in EB and the scary pack mentality in korea itself); and i am not proud of the lack of national spirit within korea (the amount of ppl, especially students, that went out to vote last time was absolutely pathetic in comparison to everything that the protesters risked and fought for back in the 80s). i am truly ashamed of these things because i am aware of my heritage and because i want to be proud of it. yet i don't believe that all hope is completely lost. i come from a long line of idealists and activists, and it's my personal belief that you CAN make a difference. you can't ever truly make the world into a perfect society, but you can die trying. the other day i was in a GSS chat and someone kept on making barbed comments like, "I am thankful that I have food on my table, because my parents work for corporations that make sure those in third-world nations do not". and kept saying stuff like that over, and over, and over again. i agree completely with him, but if he really cares so much, why doesn't he get off his ass and do something about it?? and it's so ironic that people like to volunteer and donate more in the holiday season. sometimes i just want to slap them across the face and say, "why can't you do this any other time of the year? are people starving any less any other time of the year? and do you really care? or are you just fulfilling a guilt complex because you don't want to burn in the hell you're imagining for yourself?" gah. it's late. ::steps off soapbox:: --posted by M @ 1:40 AM | 0 comments 0 Comments: |
