Thursday, April 10, 2003 a late night rambling... i was waiting for my ride today and i went to ms. sanelli's room to make a phone call, just in case dad had gone to the wrong door or thought he was picking me up at a different time... and afterwards i stayed to chat with her a bit. we talked about colleges, what i want to do, etc., and i found out that her brother has third-stage lung cancer right now, and is undergoing experimental therapy. well besides the fact that i feel really bad for her, seeing as how she lost her father last year, i told her that i hoped he felt better (since he's experiencing a lot of pain right now). and as i walked out the door, she asked me to "pray for him". now, i go to church occasionally, and am not against religion or am completely an atheist (I guess I'm sort of agnostic...), but to be honest, I don't pray on a regular basis, nor do I believe that that ever helped anyone. if christianity ever helped anyone, i think it's because it instills the basic morals and principles that human beings should follow... but seeing as how i'm pretty strict with myself already, i don't really feel the need for religion. if it offers solace in times of hardship and that's why people follow a religion, that's fine by me... the only reason why i choose not to follow one and sometimes dislike the religious is b/c their faith is often used to make excuses, or their leader uses it to manipulate them. famous historical example: the crusaders. but i see more commonplace examples pretty frequently. in any case, i believe in going out and doing what you can to help yourself, rather than placing all your hopes on an intangible being, but that's just my personal belief/philosophy. so when she asked me to "pray for him", i hesitated. i don't really pray, nor do i believe that it will really change anything in the long run. i don't plan on praying for him either, although i'll keep him in my thoughts and wish all the best for him. my question for all you religious people out there, is was it wrong for me to lie to her and tell her that i would pray for her brother? at the time, i didn't feel it was appropriate to get into a discussion about this, i didn't want to upset her, and i felt that praying in situations like these are just as much for comfort as for the hope that someone will help you solve your problems. i merely wanted to comfort her... but i felt a bit guilty (or maybe it was that unabashedly blunt and honest nature of mine that was nagging at me) in lying to her. cambridge, ma tomorrow... going to campus preview weekend at MIT. i'm a bit concerned that i'll end up sleeping on the floor and crap, my host seems nice enough but totally unenthusiastic and unknowledgable about the whole weekend. we'll see. i have a feeling that trying to make up everything next week won't be pretty either... it's getting ugly already, trying to pack and get some stuff ahead of time. i need a new monitor. my old one popped, sparked, and fizzled, so i'm using a 10 year old & somewhat broken monitor... the sides don't show up so it screws up the resolution even more... so i just resized it to this strange rectangular shape that only takes up 2/3 of the screen but at least makes everything more readable. --posted by M @ 2:31 AM | 0 comments 0 Comments: |
