Wednesday, October 08, 2003 as i was walking back from hayden (library) tonight, i detected the strong odor of chinese food. normally, i'd consider this a rather pleasant smell, especially considering the lack of real, good asian food on the MIT campus. but when the scent is wafting down the corridor in the physics dept at 10pm, you know it can only mean one thing-- grad students preparing for all-nighters. and as i continued to plod down the infinite, i realized that if i get my way, i'm going to have at least 8 more years of hell ahead of me from this point on. and if i really fulfill my desires, that's at least 12 more years left. so i had to ask myself: is that what i really want? and why exactly do i want it? and the answers are probably still yes and because that's what i truly find interesting. short of some kind of major maternal instinct surfacing, or burning out at the end of my 4 years at MIT, i think i will always want a career in bio/medicine. why the advance degree(s)? yes, to a degree it fulfills the prestige whore in me and makes it do a little happy dance. but i can always stomp that out on any given day. not completely, but enough so that it will never be the deciding factor. i think the true answer is that i really do want to do research, in the sense that i think the questions that get asked are pretty fascinating. perhaps when i'm stressed out about projects, my worries will overwhelm that fascination. but not yet. and i'd especially love to be able to take things back and forth between the lab bench and patients. hence md.phd. anyways, if i want to get there, i need to pass first. back to work. :( --posted by M @ 2:45 AM | 0 comments 0 Comments: |
