Thursday, January 13, 2005 i think more recently, part of the fun in looking for new music has been to see how my musical tastes have evolved (and might continue to)... and i've kind of been glad that i've hung onto a few CDs or files that i thought weren't that great the first time around... or that i've been reintroduced to the artist by whatever twist of fate. i remember liking BFF's 'brick' when it first got radio play. i never bought 'whatever & ever amen' because at the time i thought, 'what a STUPID sounding name for an album'. and then i had the chance to check out their debut disc from the library and i remember thinking... it's like piano-grunge. and it's ok but honestly, not that great. and 4 years later, after revisiting that album, i find it brilliant (especially because at the time it had been a while since anyone had ever heard of a rock band without a single guitar. or had they ever?). it didn't have the sharpest production ever, but i've learned to look past that now (although i still can never turn down a catchy hook). part of the 'grunge' feel is just a lot of really heavy, fuzzy sounding bass. but underneath all the piano banging, bass thumping, glass shattering noises, i found that BFF was pop music with humor and heart. same with death cab. the first time i gave their album a listen at borders, it was eh. this was when i was still obsessed with pop vocals and hadn't gotten into that sound that seems to permeate all indie rock bands' stuff (eg. death cab/interpol/the killers etc. etc.). but now? i could recognize ben gibbard's voice anywhere and some of the tracks on transatlanticism get stuck in my head for weeks. and so slowly, ever since i've gotten the ipod, i've gone back and listened to stuff that i had just relegated to a bit of my hard drive at the time... and i'm finding, quite surprisingly, that i actually like a LOT of this stuff. clem snide is now really catchy. josh ritter and leona naess no longer instantaneously grates on my nerves. with my recent fascination with any music with sampled beats and a good rhythm, i'm really liking citizen cope. i think outkast deserved all those grammys (although the repetitive choruses really piss me off when they get stuck in my head). i sort of liked ratatat the first time around, but now i think it's really great. and so when i hear a track i don't like, now i save it for another day. :-) --posted by M @ 10:51 AM | 0 comments 0 Comments: |
